Zardari clears 19 high court judges, ending Pakistan appointment deadlock Zardari clears 19 high court judges, ending Pakistan appointment deadlock President Asif Ali Zardari approved 19 additional judges for five high courts and confirmed five permanent judges. The move ends a weeks-long tussle with the federal government and clears a stalled judicial process. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday approved the appointment of 19 additional judges to five high courts and confirmed five others as permanent judges, ending a weeks-long deadlock between the president's office and the federal government over judicial appointments. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan had last month recommended 24 names for appointment to the superior judiciary, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had forwarded the summary to Zardari for approval. The matter had remained pending for weeks, and the delay was also challenged in the Islamabad High Court last week. According to the Presidency, “The president has approved the appointment of additional judges in the Lahore High Court (LHC), Sindh High Court (SHC), Peshawar High Court (PHC), Islamabad High Court (IHC), and Balochistan High Court (BHC).” The approval includes 10 additional judges for the LHC and three each for the IHC, SHC and BHC. Four additional judges of the PHC were confirmed as permanent judges, along with an additional judge of the LHC. The approval had been delayed after Zardari's legal team said that nearly all nominees proposed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), of which he is co-chairman, had been rejected by the Judicial Commission.

RBI guv asks banks to build human oversight, says blaming technology is 'unacceptable'

RBI guv asks banks to build human oversight, says blaming technology is 'unacceptable' Banks must ensure that humans remain accountable for decisions made with the help of artificial intelligence, Reserve Bank governor Sanjay Malhotra said on Tuesday, warning lenders against treating algorithms or technology vendors as responsible for their actions. Speaking at the annual Fibac event in the financial capital, Malhotra said banks adopting AI must ensure that the technology supports human judgement rather than simply replacing it. He also asked lenders to build "meaningful human oversight" into AI systems from the design stage itself. "For a bank's decision, the ultimate responsibility has to lie with the bank and not with the vendor or with the algorithm. We cannot say that it is the model who decided it. That can never be an acceptable answer, whether to the bank, to the customer, or to the regulator," Malhotra said. "Meaningful human oversight, the ability to explain, to intervene, and where necessary to override, must remain a design principle and not an afterthought," he added. AI should augment human judgement Malhotra said the RBI's approach is to see AI as a capability that banks should responsibly harness rather than a risk that needs to be contained.

We call upon the international community to hold Pakistan accountable for its misdeeds, abuses and gross violations of human rights, including against its own people," Jaiswal said."Over the last several months, we have seen large-scale protests in PoK, including during and before the elections. Air India’s outgoing Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Campbell Wilson was summoned by the Ministry of Civil Aviation headquarters on Tuesday as the government stepped up its scrutiny of the airline following the recent AI2379 midair incident and a series of operational concerns. According to Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) sources, the move came after a meeting was attended by the Civil Aviation Secretary, senior officials of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Officials were expected to review broader safety and operational issues involving Air India, including the Phuket-Delhi turbulence incident in which 17 passengers and crew members were injured. The development comes days after Air India flight AI2379, an Airbus A320 operating from Phuket to Delhi on August 4, suffered a sudden loss of altitude of about 300 feet while cruising. The flight was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members. Air India initially described the occurrence as a brief turbulence-related event that caused a momentary change in altitude. However, the DGCA subsequently classified it as a "serious incident" and transferred the investigation to the AAIB.

Vasan urges Tamil Nadu government to secure release of fishermen’s boats from Andhra Pradesh Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) leader G.K. Vasan on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) urged the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to secure the release of the fishing boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen, which were recently confiscated by the Andhra Pradesh government. Vasan said that seven fishing boats of fishermen from Tamil Nadu were confiscated by officials of the Andhra Pradesh government on June 16. They have not been released as yet, and it has affected the livelihood of the fishermen, he said. “The Tamil Nadu government should hold talks with the Andhra Pradesh government to find a durable solution that would not affect the livelihood of fishermen from Tamil Nadu,” the former Union Minister said. Vasan, while speaking to reporters in Bhavani, Erode, expressed hope that the State government would convene an all-party meeting at an appropriate time to discuss the Cauvery water issue. He said the government had taken the right step by approaching the Supreme Court to secure the State’s share of Cauvery water. He also urged the DMK to effectively articulate the State’s concerns in Parliament on the proposed delimitation of constituencies. Vasan, who was in Bhavani to attend a meeting of TMC(M) regional presidents from nine districts, said the party was strengthening its organisation in weaker areas and identifying constituencies where it had a good chance of winning in the upcoming local body elections.
