The Delhi high court has set aside seven orders passed by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in cross-appeals involving Patanjali Ayurved Limited, criticising the manner in which the matters were disposed of and describing the proceedings as a “shocking picture” of procedural lapses and a lack of transparency. HC questions common order in seven separate appeals A bench comprising justices Dinesh Mehta and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta, in its September 10 judgment uploaded on September 15, took serious exception to the ITAT passing a common order in all seven matters, which comprised separate appeals filed by Patanjali Ayurved Limited and the Revenue Department, despite different dates having been fixed for pronouncement of orders in the two sets of appeals. The ITAT, the court said, neither addressed the contentions raised by the assessee nor examined the issues involved in the appeals, and proceeded to dispose of all seven matters through an order comprising fewer than seven paragraphs. It held that such negligence could not be countenanced, particularly from appellate authorities occupying the highest rung of the fact-finding appellate hierarchy.

In a detailed order issued after the September 10 hearing, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana also directed the committee to ensure protection and confidentiality for vulnerable witnesses, including keeping their identities undisclosed, and said a separate online portal could be created to enable them to submit evidence and documents. Priority list of key issues The court’s latest directions give the HPEC a specific priority list as it begins its inquiry into the competing allegations surrounding the July 20 protests. The committee has been asked, “in the first instance”, to examine four sets of issues — use of pellet guns; targeted violence and harassment of female protesters; injuries sustained by police personnel; and excessive violence and destruction of property “occasioned on either side”. The order is a significant sharpening of the mandate given to the HPEC by the court on August 18. Co-location scam case: Supreme Court refuses to entertain Chitra Ramkrishna's plea challenging HC order The Supreme Court on Tuesday (September 15, 2026) refused to entertain former NSE managing director Chitra Ramkrishna's plea challenging an order taking cognisance of offences under the anti-corruption law in the co-location scam case against her. Ramkrishna had challenged the Delhi High Court's July 9 verdict, which dismissed her plea against a trial court order taking cognisance of the offences under the anti-corruption law in the case against her. Her plea came up for hearing before a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran. Ramkrishna, argued that the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is a private company and it can't be said that the petitioner was discharging a public duty. While disposing of her plea, the Bench said this point could be raised before the trial court, which would consider the same on its own merits. In its verdict, the High Court had held that the NSE performed a "public duty" and the petitioner, being its CEO and managing director, "equally performed a function and duty in which the public at large is invested". The High Court also upheld the sanction given by the Board of Directors of the NSE to prosecute Ms. Ramkrishna, who is an accused in the co-location scam case, stating that the order was conditional to the limited extent of determination of issues pertaining to the applicability of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act to her, and it cannot be set aside only on this ground.

Dismissing a batch of over 270 appeals filed by Centre against various orders passed by the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) and high courts, a bench of justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe said, “Raksha Mantri Report of 2015 recommended the immediate withdrawal of appeals of this nature pending against disabled soldiers, a recommendation that has not been faithfully implemented.” Directing Centre to comply with the judgments granting disability pension to ex-soldiers, the court allowed the Centre four months to comply with the directions. The Raksha Mantri’s report was one of the documents relied upon by the ex-servicemen seeking validation of their claims for disability pension even as the Centre denied that every ailment or disability cannot be attributable to military service.
